Gamers Targeted by Sophisticated Crypto-Stealing Malware Disguised as Game Mods
Kaspersky researchers have uncovered Stealka, a dangerous infostealer malware masquerading as game mods and pirated software. The malware specifically targets cryptocurrency wallets and browser credentials, with attacks spreading through trusted platforms like GitHub, SourceForge, and Softpedia.
Cybercriminals are creating professional-looking fake websites and repositories to distribute the threat, often using popular game titles like Roblox and GTA V as bait. The malware leverages gamers' trust in modding communities, with some deceptive sites even falsely claiming to conduct virus scans before downloads.
Stealka demonstrates alarming capabilities, targeting data from Chromium and Gecko-based browsers and putting over 100 applications at risk including Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Edge. This represents a significant escalation in gaming-focused malware campaigns, particularly threatening to cryptocurrency holders who use these platforms.
